19 | Diabetes Mellitus affects 34 million people in the United States and is the leading cause of kidney failure, acquired blindness, and non-traumatic amputations in this country. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells resulting in absolute insulin deficiency, while the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes involves a complex interplay between excessive hepatic glucose production, tissue insulin resistance, and insulin deficiency. Maintaining good glucose control can prevent the chronic complications of diabetes. 21 | Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) has become a common phrase used in everyday conversation since the onset of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). But the syndrome is not new and is thought to have contributed to the lethal outcomes of the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. CRS and cytokine storm are terms that describe a lifethreatening inflammatory response in the body that results in increased circulating levels of cytokines and hyperactivation of immune cells. There are many triggers to this reaction including medical therapies, pathogens and cancers. The high levels of cytokines lead to a dysregulation of the immune system and its protective mechanisms causing multisystem organ failure.
